Sustainability

For decades, the world has been under attack.

The world is thought to be 4.6 billion years old. Yet human civilisation has only existed for around 6,000 years. Humans began industrialisation in the 1800s then mass plastic production in the 1960s. Yet in this tiny timeframe of plastic’s existence on of Planet Earth it has began destroying the world in which we live.

Our planet transitioned through many habitual changes before humanity existed and then eventually became a planet that allowed humans to exist. In other words, the natural world that we speak of is the world that it became; allowing humanity to begin. In it’s natural form, plastic does not exist. It was a marvellous invention, and still is. But the end of life process of plastic products was disregarded as no one took responsibility for it.

The outcome has been mass plastic pollution across the world. The oceans are full of plastic. Marine life have consumed plastic. Microscopic plastic particles float in the air we breathe and the water we drink. It’s everywhere. And it’s causing incredible harm; to health, wildlife, and ecosystems which we don’t realise are vital to our world.

“I suppose, for me, the thing that is so galling about plastic pollution in particular is that it is so utterly unnecessary. The plastic in our oceans ought never to have got there in the first place – much of it perhaps ought not to have even been manufactured at all. And yet it is there, in unbelievable quantities, causing untold harm to marine wildlife. And, of course, once it’s in the sea, it doesn’t really break down properly – it remains there for decades or even centuries. So unless we get to grips with this quickly, we will soon find our oceans completely dominated by plastic. It’s a prospect that hardly bears thinking about.

Conventional plastics are made using toxic chemicals including petroleum. They are made to last and often do so for hundreds of years. Yet we use some plastic items (such as straws and bags) for merely a few minutes before discarding them. Then they go on to remain in the world for hundreds of years. It’s a well known (and scary) fact that every piece of plastic ever made still exists in the world in one form or another. It doesn’t ever fully degrade and can only be recycled a few times before being regarded as useless.

SavaBag is made using natural materials

It’s important that we all start living a more sustainable lifestyle. We must move away from the throwaway culture. We can consume less packaging. We can reuse items as much as possible. And for those times where we still require a disposable carrier bag, we can use one that won’t harm the earth in the same manner as traditional plastic carrier bags.

SavaBag is a disposable carrier bag containing zero toxins; a great alternative to disposable plastic bags. It’s made from natural substances; including cassava starch, vegetable oils, and vegetable polymers. Therefore, it’s fully biodegradable and bio-based, and will break down in natural conditions.

It won’t (and physically can’t!) create microplastics. Instead, it will fully degrade while naturally returning into biomass, CO2 and H20. And it’s free from toxins. And it won’t stick around in nature for decades. In fact, at ambient temperatures it will disappear within months.

Now is the time to start making a conscious effort to protect the natural world.
